‌Hector Hugh Munro (Saki)

Hector Hugo Munro (1870–1916), better known under his pen name Saki, was a writer whose frequently macabre stories satirized Edwardian society. Authors such as Noël Coward and P. G. Wodehouse among many others took inspiration from Munro, admiring the way in which he used humour to describe a situation that was, on the surface, deeply disturbing. A particularly common theme in Munro’s work is the comparison between the shifty and hypocritical manoeuvrings of Edwardian England with the brutal life-and-death struggles taking place in nature. Munro’s life was often marred by tragedy. His mother died when he was only two years old and he was brought up by his grandmother and two maiden aunts, Charlotte and Augusta, a strict upbringing that formed the background to arguably his most famous story ‘Sredni Vashtar’. Munro was 43 when World War I began. Officially over the age to enlist he joined up all the same and served with distinction. He was killed at the Battle of Ancre in November 1916.

‘Laura’ appeared in the collection Beasts and Super-Beasts in 1914, the title being a parody of George Bernard Shaw’s Man and Superman. The story is a brilliantly funny tale infused with the macabre. The central character, as the story begins, believes she has only a few days to live and yet she appears totally unconcerned, confident in the belief she will be reincarnated.
